Natalie Barkei is Project Manager Smart School and Women in Digital at Germany’s ICT association Bitkom. Together with Bitkom’s expert committee “Women in ICT”, she is dealing with potentials of AI from an ethical and social perspective. She is convinced that innovative technologies can unfold positive impact on digital society and have the potential for desirable change. Nevertheless, ethical considerations need to be taken into account in order to avoid a dystopian future.
As an advocate of women, she supports the equal participation of men and women in the development of digital technologies and a stronger visibility of female talents in the digital industry. As unequal representation of women in IT is still an issue in Germany, she is promoting women in IT job roles and a higher share of women in leading positions as well as female founders. She is strongly committed to empowering women by building networks.
Another topic at her focus is the digital transformation of German educational system. In this role, she is fostering digital competences for students and teachers in order to make schools ready for the 21st century.
Prior to her position at Bitkom, Natalie Barkei worked for a member of German Parliament, the Bundestag, in the field of digitization and e-health and for a member of the European Parliament in Brussels. She studied Political Science, American Studies and European Governance at the universities of Göttingen, Osnabrück and Paris.
