Germany is a growth market for Big Data. In 2018, hardware, software and services for Big Data applications are expected to generate sales of 6.4 billion euros, an increase of 10 percent over the previous year. This is shown by calculations made by the IT market research company IDC on behalf of the digital association Bitkom. "For more and more companies, intelligent data analyses are creating the basis for business success," says Bitkom President Achim Berg. "Big Data applications provide outstanding added value across all industries - from diagnostic support in the healthcare sector to emergency management in the event of natural catastrophes".
The fastest growing big data segment for 2018 is hardware. With an increase of 18 percent compared to the previous year, sales in Germany are expected to reach 671 million euros. However, the highest turnover in the Big Data market continues to be generated by the software division. In the current year, 3.1 billion euros are expected to be generated, an increase of 9 percent. The companies will generate around 2.6 billion euros in the current year with Big Data services. Compared to the previous year, this segment will also grow at a double-digit rate of 11 percent.

The term Big Data describes the ability to evaluate large amounts of data from a wide variety of sources at high speed. New types of databases, language analyses or visualisation tools are used.
